The Revival of the Rosary Among African Youth

In recent years, a quiet yet powerful revival has been sweeping across Africa, particularly among Catholic youth: the return to the Rosary.

In countries like Zimbabwe, Nigeria, and Kenya, youth-led Rosary prayer groups are gaining traction not only in parishes but also in schools and on social media. With platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, and TikTok, young Catholics are sharing daily mysteries, live prayer sessions, and meditations with peers across the continent.

“The Rosary has become more than just beads, it’s a spiritual anchor,” says Father Tendai Zulu of Gweru Diocese. “It gives young people a structure to engage with their faith in a world full of noise.”

The revival has also been supported by the Church. The Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops’ Conference (ZCBC) has distributed over 50,000 rosaries in rural parishes in the past two years alone. Programs such as “Rosary Month” each October now include youth retreats, online challenges, and Marian devotion series tailored for a digital generation.

As one young Catholic shared during a retreat in Bulawayo: “When I pray the Rosary, I don’t feel alone. It’s like the Blessed Mother is walking with me.”

The Rosary, once seen as something for older Catholics, is becoming a sign of youthful boldness and a quiet revolution in the making.
