In a heartfelt message released today, Pope Leo XIV has called upon the youth of the world to embrace their role as “witnesses” of Christ, urging them to become “pilgrims of hope” in an increasingly complex and challenging society. The message coincides with the upcoming XL World Youth Day, scheduled for November 23, 2025, coinciding with the Solemnity of Christ the King of the Universe.
The theme for this year’s World Youth Day, “You also are my witnesses, because you have been with me” (John 15:27), emphasizes the importance of deepening one’s friendship with Jesus as a foundation for faith and witness. In a joint statement with Bishop Nyandoro, a prominent leader in youth pastoral care, the Pope highlighted three central aspects of witness: cultivating friendship with Jesus, engaging in mission, and contributing to peace in society.
Pope Leo XIV underscored the significance of developing a personal relationship with Jesus. He described this friendship as a “gift of the Holy Spirit” that empowers young people to share their faith actively. “In the stillness of prayer, they will find the strength to become witnesses,” the Pope stated.
Bishop Nyandoro echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that this relationship should be nurtured through communal worship and personal reflection. “We must teach our youth that this friendship is the flame that ignites their hearts and guides their actions,” he said.
The Pope and Bishop Nyandoro also stressed that witnessing goes beyond mere words; it requires action. “To witness is to engage actively in the mission of Christ,” the Bishop explained. He recounted inspiring stories from his diocese where young people have come together to serve the needy, providing food and support to the marginalized.
The Pope encouraged youth to embody Christ’s teachings in their daily lives, asserting that every act of kindness can serve as a powerful testament to their faith. “Witnessing is about being present and standing in solidarity with those who suffer,” he remarked.
In light of global challenges, the Pope called on young people to become agents of peace and reconciliation. He emphasized that peace is not merely the absence of conflict but the presence of justice and understanding. Bishop Nyandoro urged youth to engage in meaningful dialogue across communities and faiths, highlighting the importance of building bridges rather than walls.
“We must teach our youth that their voices can shape the future,” he said, calling for active participation in conversations that foster understanding and unity.
As the global Church prepares for the World Youth Day celebrations, both the Pope and Bishop Nyandoro invite dioceses, parishes, and youth groups to share the message widely. They encourage communities to document their activities and initiatives, fostering a spirit of collaboration and inspiration among young people worldwide.
“We are eager to hear about the diverse ways in which you are celebrating this momentous occasion,” the Pope stated, emphasizing that each experience enriches the collective faith journey.
With the call for young people to rise as “pilgrims of hope,” Pope Leo XIV’s message resonates deeply in a world yearning for compassion and understanding. As the Church gears up for World Youth Day, the message serves as a powerful reminder of the vital role of youth in shaping a more hopeful and peaceful future.
